The Story
Legend has it that Count Camillo Negroni walked into Caffè Casoni in Florence in 1919 and asked bartender Fosco Scarselli to strengthen his usual Americano (Campari, sweet vermouth, soda) by replacing the soda with gin. The result was named after the Count who ordered it.
Whether the story is entirely true or not, the cocktail is. Equal parts gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth — stirred over ice, served in a rocks glass with an orange peel. That’s it. Three ingredients, one ratio, infinite depth.
The Negroni resisted modernization for decades until a 2022 TikTok video of actress Emma D’Arcy ordering a Negroni Sbagliato (the “wrong Negroni” — prosecco instead of gin) went viral with over 4 million views. That moment introduced the entire drink family to a new generation. By 2025, the Negroni is the #1 benchmark cocktail that educated drinkers use to assess a bar’s quality — and Negroni Week (the annual charitable event) now raises millions for global causes.
Ingredients
| Ingredient | Amount | Notes |
|---|
| London Dry Gin | 30 ml / 1 oz | Tanqueray is the gold standard; Beefeater for approachability |
| Campari | 30 ml / 1 oz | Non-negotiable — the soul of the drink |
| Sweet vermouth | 30 ml / 1 oz | Carpano Antica Formula for the best; Martini Rosso for everyday |
The golden rule: 1:1:1. Never deviate.
Instructions
- Add gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth to a mixing glass.
- Fill with ice — large, clear cubes.
- Stir for 25–30 seconds. The goal is dilution, integration, and extreme cold — without aeration.
- Strain into a rocks glass over a large single ice cube or sphere.
- Express the orange peel: Hold a 5cm strip of orange peel skin-side down over the glass and squeeze gently — watch the fine mist of citrus oil spray across the surface.
- Run the peel around the rim of the glass, then rest it on the rim or place it in the drink.
- Serve.
On the ice: A single large cube or sphere melts more slowly than smaller cubes, keeping the drink colder longer without over-diluting. This is the professional approach and makes a visual statement.
Glassware & Presentation
Glass: Short rocks glass (Old Fashioned glass)
Serve: On the rocks — specifically one large cube or sphere

The Negroni is a masterclass in balance. Campari’s bitter orange brightness meets the gin’s botanical dryness and the vermouth’s herbal sweetness. The result is more than the sum of its parts — complex, warming, evolving as the ice slowly dilutes it.
Variations
| Variation | Twist |
|---|
| Negroni Sbagliato | Replace gin with Prosecco — lighter, bubblier, the viral version |
| Boulevardier | Replace gin with bourbon or rye — rich, warming, American soul |
| White Negroni | Replace Campari with Suze (gentian bitter) and vermouth with Lillet Blanc |
| Mezcal Negroni | Mezcal instead of gin — smoky and deeply complex |
| Oaxacan Negroni | Half gin, half mezcal — the bridge version |
| Cynar Negroni | Replace Campari with Cynar for earthy, artichoke bitterness |

The Negroni is one of the canonical low-volume, high-flavour drinks — a single 90 ml pour that rewards slow sipping. If you’re curious about the philosophy behind drinking with more intention, our Mindful Drinking guide is a good place to start.
